Just in case anyone was planning on purchasing acomputer and running a 64-bit OS, it’s important to be aware of the maximum RAM limitation. It appears my Dell M90 is being limited by the 945 Chipset.

Dell is kind enough to mention the following:

“The total amount of available memory will be less than 4GB. The amount less depends on the actual system configuration. To fully utilize 4GB or more of memory requires a 64-bit enabled processor and 64-bit OS.”

This is a little misleading since it implies that running a 64-bit OS on the M90 will allow you to fully utilize 4GB or more of RAM.

Even though the M90 is 64-bit enabled, the full 4GB will not be available. The 945 Express Chipset is 32-bit and limits the amount of accessible RAM to 3326mb even when running a 64-bit OS.

really strange. most ppl dont know that they have to count the all memory on the system (central RAM, GPU, sound cards, and even drives cache mem, and all ROM).

My new laptop handles 2GiB per slot. my exgf (a 2 years ASUS) can only handle 1GiB per slot. i have 4g of ram plus 2x256 GPU and use it all on Ubuntu 64. with 32bits i have 3g

the maximum support for my Dell's M90 is 2 x 2Gb. It can handle 4Gb but because of the chipset the OS will never see the all 4Gb...

as i said, it will see 4g, just not from central RAM.

We got a new server from IBM and i can see close to 4g using SBS 32bit. sure the graphic card as only 8mb
